WHAT IS CLIMBDURO?

Climbduro is a digital platform launching in 2019 that is all about digging deep, challenging your friends, maybe even challenging your foes and most importantly challenging yourself! Localized Climbduro Challenges will be ready when you are, so get prepared to tackle the hand-selected challenges and embrace the struggle that is climbing a bike.

In Climbduro, every participant who gets on their bike is a winner, and everyone who completes a Challenge will be eligible to win prizes from our great sponsors. It doesn’t matter if you’re the fastest, the slowest or somewhere right in the middle, prizes will be drawn every week for each category. With some hard effort, you may be crowned a CLIMBZILLA. NEAD MORE REASON TO JOIN? With every participant attempt, the challenge sponsor will donate to a local charity through our BANKROLLIN program. Ride and give back? Awesome!

2018 GRAND CLIMBDURO CHALLENGES

PRESENTED BY:

The Grand Climbduro is a mass start race limited to 99 riders. From Bragg Creek to the Moose Mountain Summit you will encounter all the hard stuff with times and prizes attached. The rest is a not so gentle cruise back to the start / finish to find a tasty beverage and your bragging rights.

The race is to the top, and it contains three challenges.

1 - PARK DISTILLERY CLIMBZILLA CHALLENGE

30.4KM  | 1150M  |  3%

The Park Distillery Climbzilla challenge is a race to the top of Moose Mountain from Calgary Cycle. It is equal parts Pavement, Dirt Road, and Offroad trail. Only one man and one woman will be crowned CLIMBZILLA. Will it be you? This Challenge is not for the faint of heart just the Strongest Man and Woman will be rewarded. The winners get $1000 cold hard cash. Being second gets you a pat on the back and perhaps a high five.

2 - SANTA CRUZ BICYCLES MOOSE MTN ROAD

7.09KM   495M   7%

The Santa Cruz Bicycles Moose Mountain Road is not easy or straightforward. It is dirt from bottom to top and is entirely different in wet or dry conditions. We’d love to tell you that a Road or CX bike will be the best choice but if it has been dry and hot for days the road will be powdery and slow. If it rains the day of the event, it will be mud. If it rains two days before it will be hard as pavement. Good luck on your tire and bike choice.

3 - OAKLEY MOOSE MOUNTAIN SUMMIT

5.10KM   427M   8%

Oakley Moose Mountain Summit is impressive in every way including the effort it takes to get up it. Do not kid yourself by thinking it is just an MTB double track road. This monster lulls you into thinking you are hot stuff but quickly rears its ugly head and kicks you in the chest. The final summit will make or break you. Good luck.

BANKROLLIN is a program that gives back to the cycling community in a literal groundbreaking way. Climbduro’s sponsors donated $10 per participant and split the donation between the Moose Mountain Trail Society & the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association to support trail maintenance & new trail builds. This donation leaves a legacy that directly affects all future users in a positive way.

ABOUT THE EVENT

divider-02

In the ever-evolving community of cycling, no one bike style rules them all.

The Grand Climbduro was a test of this. This over-the-top challenge took challengers through a cornucopia of terrain. Including road, gravel, high-country rock, and dirt… what kind of bike did you ride?

The Challenges.

The neutralized road start @ 25KMPH took riders through the Bragg Creek Provincial Park. Turning onto Highway 66 the pressure ramped up. Still, a controlled ride, the pace car accelerated three times in the first 3KM, with the final speed being 50KMPH.

This pressure cooker took the group to the bottom of the first timed section: Moose Mountain Road – 7.5KM of dirt and 500 vertical meters of UP! Now, the KOM on this bounced between riders on road bikes and XC MTB bikes. What did you pick??? At the top of the road was the end of the first timed section, nutrition, aid and washrooms. As much as riders would have liked to spend the rest of the day here watching the joy on other riders faces, they had to be strategic as there was a 4hr time cut-off to get back to the finish… and… they still had the penultimate climb to the summit!

As riders moved on, they moved into the High Country to tackle the Moose Summit. After a short transitional downhill, with lots of sharp rocks, was the start of the second-time section. Another 500M of vertical in only 5KM! Flowy and smooth at the bottom, this turned into a brutal pitch with an entirely rocky and super technical surface with aggressive switchbacks to the summit. Ouch. Without a doubt, a fatter tire ruled this section. The summit was the end of the last timed section and the top of the Climbzilla KOM. Did you make it?

By now riders most likely had the shakes as their timed section completed. The descent back to the aid station passed earlier was gnarly and required full attention. Other riders tackling the climb cheered them on, but gave right of way. Throwing high fives with their pals all the way, without forgetting they had a 4-hour time-cutoff.

Oh, one more thing, riders we’re completely self-supporting in regards to any mechanicals. We provided tubes, tires, and a mechanic at the base of the Moose Summit to help, but riders we’re prepared to keep rolling.
